Writing a cover letter can be daunting, but it’s also an important opportunity to showcase your skills and stand out from other candidates. As a former recruiter who reviewed thousands of applicants, having a cover letter allows you to share more details of why you’re an excellent match for the role. According to a study by Jobvite, candidates with a cover letter are 29% more likely to be contacted by a recruiter or hiring manager. To help you prepare for your next role that requires a cover letter, I share some tips to help you create one.

Here are some tips to help you craft a compelling cover letter:

1. Start with a strong introduction. Use the first paragraph to introduce yourself and explain your interest in the position. You can also mention why you’re a good fit for the role and what you can bring to the team.

2. Highlight your relevant experience. Use the second and third paragraphs to describe your relevant experience and skills. Be sure to provide specific examples of how you’ve used these skills in the past. Including specific examples of how your skills and experience align with the job description and the company’s mission can make your cover letter more compelling and demonstrate your value as a candidate.

3. Show your enthusiasm. Use the final paragraph to express your enthusiasm for the position and the company. You can also reiterate why you’re a good fit for the role and how you can contribute to the team.

4. Tailor your letter to the job. Make sure to customize your cover letter for each job you apply for. Use the job description and company website to understand what they’re looking for, and tailor your letter accordingly. Adding a personalized touch, such as addressing the hiring manager by name or mentioning something unique about the company that resonates with you, can help make your cover letter stand out and show that you have done your research.

Remember, your cover letter is your chance to make a strong first impression and stand out. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to crafting a compelling cover letter. You can also use the above information to create a template you can then use so you’re always prepared to create a cover letter. There are many opinions about the actual value of a cover letter, but if it increases your chances even by a little, then it’s worth including one.

Remember that you got this! I wish you the best of luck with creating your next stellar cover letter!
