It wasn’t until the middle of the 3rd quarter last year that I begin to meet weekly with my BBF (Business Best Friend) to discuss career goals and review progress on reaching those goals. This partnership helped me to be accountable for the goals I wanted to accomplish and pushed me beyond my comfort zone. It was an adjustment moving beyond my comfort zone, but this partnership created structure for my career and by far is one of the best things I could have done.
Oh the things you wish you knew when you first started out in your career.
So let me share with you the advantages I’ve had that may be helpful to you in your career!
Before I share the tips let me explain the difference between a Mentor and Accountability partner.
Mentor – Is a trusted counselor or a teacher
Accountability Partner – Is someone who holds you accountable for your actions
So depending on the goals you’re looking to reach with your career you may want to have a Mentor or an Accountability Partner or someone who can serve as both. My BBF Dionna Appling serves as both Mentor and Accountability Partner as the successful CEO and Founder of Business Advocates Pro, Inc.
Now let's get to the benefits of having a Mentor/Accountability Partner...
1. No More Excuses - Having someone hold you accountable for the action items you're not completing to reach your goals.
That's right my ah ha moment was when I realized I busy myself with many things but none of which were helping me reach my goals.
2. Bye Bye Comfort Zone - Having someone push you to push yourself to do more. Embrace the challenge of change as change usually produces different results!
You don't realize you're stuck in a pattern of not venturing out of your comfort zone until you have a good Mentor asking you if you're really doing all you can be doing.
3. The Path Has Been Created - The biggest advantage is having someone whose already ventured down the path that your about to journey down to provide the do's and don'ts and provide guidance so you don't make the same mistakes.
Now are you ready to go out and find a Mentor or Accountability Partner or both?
On the next blog... I will share the benefits of networking and building a network
